The 131 km long coastline of Goa on the golden Konkan coast of the Western Ghats is along the Arabian Sea. This small former Portuguese enclave is one of India' most popular tourist spots, both for the domestic and international traveller. The name Goa is derived from the Konkani word `Goyan', which means a patch of tall grass.

The sheer inaccessibility of Goa by land has always kept it out of the mainstream of Indian History. On the other hand, its control of the seas and above all the lucrative spice trade made it a much-coveted prize for rival colonial powers. Until a century before the arrival of the Portuguese adventure Vasco Da Gama who landed near Kozhikode in Kerala in 1498, Goa had belonged for over a thousand years to the kingdom of Kadamba. In the interim it had been successfully conquered by the Karnatakan Vijayanagars, the Muslim Bahmanis and Yousuf Adil Shah of Bijapur but the capture of the fort at Panaji by Alfonso De Albuquerque in 1510 signaled the start of a Portuguese occupation that was to last for 450 years.

Meanwhile, conversions to Christianity started by the Franciscans gathered pace when St.Francis Xavier founded the Jesuit Mission in 1542. With the advent of the inquisition soon afterwards laws were introduced censoring literature and banning any faith other than Catholicism even the long established Syrian Christian community were branded heretics. Hindu temples were destroyed and converted Hindus adopted Portuguese names such as DA Silva, Correa and De'Sousa which remain common in the region. The transitional influence of the Jesuits eventually alarmed the Portuguese government. The Jesuits were expelled in 1749 which made it possible for Indian Goans to take up the priesthood. However, standards of education suffered and Goa entered a period of decline. The Portuguese were not prepared to help but neither would they allow native Goans equal rights. An abortive attempt to establish the Goan Republic was quelled with the execution of fifteen Goan conspirators.

Come early dawn, kettledrums and the blare of trumpets, announce to the sleepy little neighboring villages that the day of rejoicing and festivity has arrived. The tolling bells call the faithful to prayer and devotees visit the shrine in a non-stop stream. There's now an excellent road winding its way up the steep hill right to the door of the chapel, making the ascent possible by car. Still, most of the devotees prefer to climb up hill. Even the very old and infirm make their way up for nine consecutive days to hear Mass and recite the Rosary before the Lady of the Blue Mantle. It would seem to convey that fast and feast as much as you can and brace yourself for a dedicated period of lent. During Shigmotsav or Shigmo, a parade dance is performed by the traditional folk dancers who are joined by the street dancers. The dancers carry hand-crafted floats that have mythological and religious significance. Shigmotsav or Shigmo is celebrated in March. The time of the celebration coincides with the Carnival. There are two varieties of the festival, the Dhakto Shigmo and the Vodlo Shigmo. Dhakto Shigmo is celebrated by the agriculturists, the labor class and the rural population. Dhakto Shigmo means ‘small Shigmo' which implies that the celebrations are on a smaller scale. The Vodlo Shigmo or the ‘big Shigmo' is jointly celebrated and everybody participates in the festivities irrespective of class. Vodlo Shigmo begins with Holi Purnima and extends to five days.

The festivities associated with Shigmotsav or Shigmo include the singing of the ritualistic choral songs and dances that are performed amidst the village gathering. Goa Carnival

Along with its beaches, Goa is equally famous for its carnival. Carnival of Goa is so popular that it is the most eagerly awaited event both by the locals as well as the tourists. Carnival is derived from the Portuguese word 'Carnaval', which means 'to take away meat'. It is a the commencement of the period of 40 days of fasting of Lent. During this period abstinence from meat is mandatory.

It has, in the course of time, absorbed some of the Hindu traditions and has crossed the boundaries of the state or religion. People from all over the country visit Goa especially during this period to participate in the carnival.

The carnival is held in the month of February. The carnival in Goa normally begins on Sabado Gordo, i.e., Fat Saturday and concludes on Shrove Tuesday, i.e., Fat Tuesday. Continuously for three days and nights, Momo, the legendary king takes over the state. The streets become live and vibrant with dance and music and looks riotous in various color. Feast Of Three Kings

The Feast of Three Kings is celebrated to offer prayers to Lady of Mount. The idol of Lady of Mount is decorated with jewellary and prayers are offered seeking blessings from her.

The festival is celebrated on the Festa dos Reis or the Epiphany on January 6. The Feast of Three Kings is celebrated equally by the Hindus as well as by the Christians. The festival is an ode to the Lady of Mount, who is considered to be the protector of people. She is said to be provider of children to married couples and is said to fulfill wishes made at her chapel. The processions of the festival continues for 9 days and ends on Epiphany, 6th January. According to a legend a boulder on a nearby hill is clearly stamped with two baby footprints and those of an adult, together with a trough carved out of the rock which, marks the spot where the Virgin rested with the Infant while the horse that brought them quenched its thirst, before proceeding to Hill of Remedies where she chose to remain. However, some historians state that the site now occupied by the Chapel of Remedios was once the site of a Hindu temple. Perhaps that's the reason why a large number of Hindu devotees make the yearly pilgrimage to the Mount to worship the Madonna, bringing with them offerings of flowers, incense, and candles.

The end of this festival is done after 9 days of continous dance, music and partying. During these nine days, Hindu and Christian followers come the the chapel of the Our Lady of Mount and offer there prayers and seek blesing from her. On the last day, three small boys of 8 to 10 years of age are selected to enact Kings. These three kings drive from different paths and come to the chapel to offer there wealth and money to the Lady of Mount. The Kings arrive with a jolly crowd. After the rituals, an extensive fair also springs up covering the entire hilltop. One can buy anything from a meal to copper and brassware, furniture, clothes, toys, trinkets, sweetmeats, glass bangles and spices of all sorts.

Bonderam Festival

The Bonderam festival is light-hearted harking back to the animosity that existed between two wards of a village during the Portuguese era. The two wards, Piedalda and Sao Mathias, in Divar Island used to engage in bitter feuds over property issues that often led to bloodshed and even death. Exasperated at these bickering, the Portuguese authorities demarcated the boundaries of the two wards using colorful flags.

However the hatred ran so deep that the warring factions still knocked down the demarcation flags using stones. Over the years, people of the region have mellowed down and now they celebrate the Bonderam festival in a mock remembrance of the quarrels of the past. As part of the celebrations, people engage in mock battles using Fotashes, a toy weapon made of bamboo stem.

The Bonderam feast takes the form of a carnival with gaily colored floats strutting down the main thorough fare of the village. Each ward of the village sends a float to the parade and no efforts are spared to outdo each other. The parade is marked by joyous celebrations accompanied by loud music. People from adjoining areas congregate in large numbers for a peek into the unfolding festivities.
